Environmental Education

Pang Soong Lodge Field Centre offers opportunities for schools to engage in high quality environmental education, outdoor activities and provides community and conservation service opportunities. These educational facilities can be made available for all ages of student from school to universities. Courses are designed in consultation with the visiting teachers, arriving at a mutually agreed course plan in advance. Supporting educational materials are provided as part of the course and samples can be seen here. Our fieldwork sites are well researched and secondary data has been collected in numerous locations to support students learning.

Pang Soong staff go to considerable lengths to ensure that fieldwork is carried out as safely as possible. All of our sites are risk assessed in advance and a sample risk assessment is available here. Individual risk assessments are made for every programme and risk assessments are updated regularly. Operational codes of practice that have been developed for the company can be seen here

Taught courses run at the lodge
Courses for Environmental Systems and Societies and IB Biology, and A level are already run at Pang Soong Lodge and we offer IB schools ToK camps, Group 4 projects, CAS programmes (conservation management/monitoring, reforestation, helping in the village schools and development projects).

Key Stage 5/Sixth Form/High School
For IB, A level or AP curriculums we can host classic ecological studies or environmental sciences. As an example IB programmes are outlined below, but this is easily adapted to A level or AP requirements.

IB subjects such as Biology, Geography or Environmental Systems and Societies are often supported by a fieldwork element, but the needs of other courses such as TOK can be well supported by environmental activities and are designed for a mixture of students studying Biology SL and HL, along with Environmental Systems and Societies. We can also support other components of the IB diploma courses such as Group 4 projects or TOK courses. For Group 4 projects students need to cover the planning discussion sessions in school in advance and then equipment requirements can be arranged to support their studies. TOK courses include a range of supporting lectures and activities to explore how the ways of knowing, sensory perception, emotions, language and reason as ways to understand our environment.

Key Stage 4/IGCSE/MYP
The demands of courses such as IGCSE Environmental Management, Biology or Geography are well met by a field trip to Pang Soong Lodge which can focus on the traditional approaches to these subjects or through case studies of related management issues. We can also offer fieldwork to cover the coursework requirements in IGCSE or MYP inquiry based units.

Key Stage 3 and Younger Students
Pang Soong offers a variety of studies suitable for younger students. Academic studies are
enhanced through hands on activities and experiential nature walks designed to stimulate
interest and generate enthusiasm for the subject. Younger children delight in the freshwater minibeast studies and earthwalk activities offered.

Personal medical and diet
Below is a file outlining what we need to know for all staff and student staying at PSL. We recommend doing this via the link on the track of the tiger website (follow the link under the document), the organising member of staff needs to complete the first form and this sets up a database for students and other staff to enter privately into a group document. They just need to be emailed the link and code.
